Tighten Door Hinge Screws

Tighten the hinge screws in the door and the jamb.

Replace the screw closest to the doorstop. The wider threads will tighten in enlarged stripped screw holes. First check that the hinge screws are tight. You can adjust most cabinet door hinges quite easily using the screws inside the door.

Snug them firmly with a screwdriver rather than a drill to avoid stripping the screw holes. Screw a 3 inch 7 6 cm screw into the top door hinge. In these situations the best repair method is to drill out the screw hole with a 1 2 inch bit then fill the enlarged hole with a glued 1 2 inch hardwood plug or solid hardwood dowel. Using a phillips screwdriver you can tighten or loosen the screws moving the cabinet up and down side to side or in and out.

Easy fixes may also be ineffective in situations where a heavy door has caused hinge screws to strip out the wood on the edge of the door or the door frame. Tighten the screw all the way until the hinge is secure against the jamb. Screwing in a longer screw will help pull the door back toward the jamb. If the hinge and jamb are painted cut the paint around the leaf with a utility knife swing the leaf away from the jamb.

Remove the screws that hold the loose hinge leaf to the door jamb. Loose hinges can cause a door to stick bind or scrape the floor. Then try closing the door. After i get the door swinging properly i adjust the hinges so that there is a consistent gap between the door and the jamb.

Extra long fringe screws can be used to repair loose and stripped door hinge screws or to reinforce your doors before the hinge screws strip and cause problems. When adjusting hinges i often have to adjust the location of screw holes. The standard size head sits flush in the hinge and looks identical to the original. Lucky for you it is easy to tighten loose hinges and make your doors work like new.

The door should now close without any issue. The screw at the top of the hinge is usually to adjust the height of the door with a tolerance of 4 5mm. The screw at the side is to adjust the door laterally with a tolerance of 5mm. The wrong way is a temporary fix not cool.
