To tile around a tub or shower start by measuring the height of the back wall from the lip of the tub to the top of the area to be tiled.

Use a wet saw with a diamond blade to cut all the tiles.
If you mix x77 per the directions use the correct trowel size back butter your tiles and use directional troweling your tiles won t slide down the wall.
Prep the shower area for tile layout to start tiling prepare by running a bead of silicone caulk around the perimeter of the area you are tiling to seal it image 1.
Apply it to the wall with the bottom edge about 1 4 in.
For a shower enclosure extend the tile and the backerboard at least 6 inches above the showerhead.
That way if you do have to cut tile to fit they ll be at the bottom where the tub or shower pan might be slightly out of level.
Fill the gap between the tile and the tub with caulk.
If the tub is level set a full tile at its top edge.
For the vertical layout begin your pattern at the top of the wall so there ll be full uncut tile at the top.
Cement backer board is used as a sub surface for tiling usually for showers or bathtubs.

To help hide the awkward appearance of an out of level tub make the bottom row of tiles at least three fourths of a tile high.
